Honours
2008/2009
Thornbury Falcons recently held its annual awards evening. Awards were
presented at each age group for Players' Player as well as Manager's
Player and special awards were made to Andy Shutler, Falcons Man of the
Year, Craig Bevan, Manager of the Year for his team's cup win, and to the Under 11 Boys team managed by Darren Bancroft, Younger Team of the Year for their league title in the Hanham Minor League.
The award presented to Andy Shutler is of special mention as he started
the season by establishing an under 9 girls team and ended it by also
running one of the under 15 boys teams as well as organising referees,
never an easy task.
In his speech Chair Toni Watola drew attention to: the very successful
annual 6-a-side tournament at which over 700 under 8 to under 13 girls and boys participated; and the FA Respect programme that the club is fully signed up to and which aims to improve respect across the board, for players, managers and supporters but most notably for referees and other officials.
Toni also spoke of moves toward the Falcons securing their own playing facilities, supported by Thornbury and South Gloucestershire councillors, thus bringing the club together into one place, and about the increased numbers of girls teams in the club. Next year will be the most successful for Thornbury Girls as the club will be running teams at under 15, under 13 and under 10. All new players at these ages or the year 'below' are most welcome.
Toni finished by covering an agreement in principal to merge with
Thornbury Town. Such a merger would mean that Thornbury would have one football team and would secure the move last season where a very
successful under 18 team was re-established at Thornbury Town consisting
of Falcons players, coaches and managers. A merger was agreed in
principal at the AGMs of both clubs with the expectation that full merger
will achieved before the 2010-2011 playing season.
